Johnson Matthey Noble MetalsJohnson Matthey is a speciality chemicals company focused on its core skills in: Catalysts, Precious Metals, Colours and Coatings and Pharmaceutical Materials.Through our commitment to investment in Research and Development we have established global market leadership positions with many of our products and services. Amongst them are included precious metals refining, marketing and fabrication. The Noble Metals business, part of the Precious Metals Division, deals with the fabrication of the platinum group metals into a wide range of products. Precious metals and in particular platinum are characterised by their high temperature melting points, resistance to corrosion, electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. As a result, in their natural metallic state they find applications across a multitude of industries. As a catalyst platinum alloys are the exclusive choice for the oxidation of ammonia to produce nitric acid, and in the glass industry the corrosion resistance of platinum group metals are vital for the protection of furnace ceramics. Other examples of corrosion resistance applications include crucibles for analytical work, spark plug electrodes, and coated/clad thermocouple sheaths for temperature measurement. The increasing use of platinum to manufacture a diversity of sensors derives from the combination of all these properties. Platinum and its alloys are also finding increasing usage in medical implant applications, where their biocompatibility properties are exploited. Our Noble Metals business has been the first to introduce a number of products to markets as a result of leading edge materials technology: 1970s First to develop a commercial grain stabilising process (ZGS) for platinum and its alloys to provide high strength materials operating at high temperatures 1980s First to introduce knitted catalyst gauzes (InterLok range) for ammonia oxidation to replace the less efficient woven gauzes used for several decades of nitric acid production. 1990s First to develop an adherent platinum coating (ACT®) on ceramics for enhanced corrosion resistance for furnace applications in the glass industry. 2000s Major R&D expenditure on the metallurgy of Iridium and Iridium alloys for applications as automotive and industrial ignition electrodes, and for use as crucibles for single crystal production. In addition to our technological capability, stringent quality standards and modern production methods are employed to guarantee our world class product range. Our sales service, technical assistance and reliability has also built an enviable reputation in the market as a trusted and dependable partner in industry.
