Secondary Abatement Modifications

  • Taking Advantage of Lessons Learned

As a global designer and fabricator for Nitric Acid Industry heat train components, Alloy Engineering is a specialized fabricator of high nickel alloy and stainless steel components for high heat and corrosive applications.  From catalyst baskets and grid systems to code vessels and exchangers, Alloy Engineering brings nearly 70 years of history to delivering on your critical project needs.  As a partner with Johnson Matthey we have a daily focus on perfecting N2O abatement applications and a commitment to helping you to deliver on your plant goals to effectively reduce emissions.

Preparing your ammonia oxidation burner to accept a secondary catalyst is no mystery to Johnson Matthey and Alloy Engineering. Over the past three years we’ve collaborated to provide a solution to introducing secondary catalyst in over 60 burners globally. Combine that with the years of service by JM and AECo to the Nitric Acid Industry and you realize a great deal of application expertise that is at your service. Whether High Pressure, Low to Medium, Dual or Atmospheric, we’re familiar with the footprint of each technology provider. This familiarity gives us a great understanding of where to begin to fit your plant operating conditions to a catalyst containment system that will allow you to optimize performance of the abatement catalyst and the longevity of the burner components. Our JM - AECO partnership will help you realize a successful abatement project.

Take advantage of the expertise, here’s a few suggestions to consider as you work toward an abatement solution:

  • Evaluate of the current burner arrangement

    • Make available drawings of the basket, grid arrangement, burner head and vessel.

    • Identify Materials of Construction of the current arrangement.

    • Photos from previous maintenance events help to illustrate the current condition or concerns you may want to take into account such as cracks, distortion or uneven surfaces.

    • Drawings only tell part of the story.  Perform a detailed inspection of the burner components to document conditions, measure actual dimensions when distortion has occurred. Alloy Engineering can participate in this review.

  • Act early in Project Development to burner modification needs.

    • Lead time for high nickel alloys can run from 4 -24 weeks.

    • Timing may be impacted by shipping needs.

    • 6 months is not a long time! Order early in Project Development timeline.
